Gavin Smith is appointed Senior Vice President of International for the largest global cruise line, Royal Caribbean International. Smith oversees international sales, marketing and commercial operations for the cruise line’s business in Australia, the Caribbean, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East. In 2016, 1.5 million guests will be sourced from these key markets.
Prior to this role, he served as Managing Director, Australia and New Zealand, overseeing all commercial and operational activities in the region for the corporation’s three brands. During his leadership, the Australian operation saw substantial growth in demand for cruising from travelers across Australia and New Zealand. The cruise company more than tripled the number of ships sailing in the Australasian waters, and expanded itineraries to offer an even broader variety of vacation experiences during summers in the southern hemisphere.
First appointed in 2010, Smith also is the acting Chairman of the International Cruise Council of Australia, the not-for-profit organization dedicated to training travel consultants and raising consumer awareness of cruising.
Prior to joining Royal Caribbean, Smith had 20 years of experience in the travel and tourism industry, serving as General Manager for one of Australia’s leading retail travel groups, Jetset Travelworld; and Managing Director for P&O Cruises Australia. He was also President for Carnival Australia, where he managed the organization through a period of significant growth. Smith has held various senior sales, marketing and communications positions in Australia and the United Kingdom.
Smith received a Bachelor’s in business studies with a major in marketing from the University of Technology in Sydney, Australia.
