LA RECONOCIDA PARATRIATLETA DA NOMBRE AL NUEVO BARCO DE ROYAL CARIBBEAN, ODYSSEY OF THE SEAS

La primera madrina bahameña de la línea de cruceros es honrada en la ceremonia de nombramiento en Fort Lauderdale, Florida

MIAMI, 14 noviembre de 2021 – Es oficial: Royal Caribbean International celebró su nuevo barco que cambiará el juego, Odyssey of the Seas, durante la ceremonia de nombramiento en el Puerto Everglades en Fort Lauderdale, Florida el 13 de noviembre.  La ocasión inspirada en el Caribe culminó en el momento que la madrina del Odyssey y primera paratriatleta de Las Bahamas en competir en las eliminatorias de los Juegos Paralímpicos, Erin Brown, otorgó una bendición de seguridad al barco y a todos los que naveguen en él durante las próximas décadas.

Brown estuvo acompañada a bordo por el chairman y CEO de Royal Caribbean Group Richard Fain y por el presidente y CEO de Royal Caribbean International Michael Bayley. La ocasión también marcó un momento histórico en la tradición del nombramiento de madrinas, ya que Brown se convirtió en la primera madrina bahameña de la línea de cruceros.

"Hoy tenemos la oportunidad de mostrar al mundo cómo son la imaginación y la determinación cuando se unen", dijo Fain. "Todo lo que nuestros equipos han hecho en los últimos 20 meses nos ha llevado a este momento, en el que finalmente podemos mostrar la innovación y la belleza del Odyssey of the Seas".

Brown, que lleva 17 años como defensora para quienes viven con discapacidades en Las Bahamas, es madre y superviviente de cáncer. Lleva siendo deportista toda su vida y se le diagnosticó un osteosarcoma -cáncer de huesos- en fase 4 en 2004. Fue más de un año después, tras recibir tratamiento, cuando Brown tomó la decisión de amputarse la pierna por encima de la rodilla. Tras haber visto a su propia madre luchar contra el lupus ligado al cáncer durante cinco años, la madrina de Odyssey estaba decidida a volver más fuerte que nunca por ella misma, por su familia y por otras personas que pudieran inspirarse para luchar. Brown se convirtió en la primera paratriatleta bahameña en entrenar en el Centro de Entrenamiento Olímpico y Paralímpico de Estados Unidos en Colorado Springs y en competir en una prueba clasificatoria para los Juegos Paralímpicos.

Además de sus logros deportivos, Brown es una defensora de los que viven con discapacidades desde hace mucho tiempo y trabaja en la Universidad de Las Bahamas, como responsable del cumplimiento de las normas y consejera que defiende el aumento del acceso y las oportunidades para los estudiantes viviendo con discapacidades.

"Es una persona increíble que empuja a cambiar el statu quo, lo que la convierte en la elección perfecta para un barco tan innovador como el Odyssey of the Seas. También es apropiado porque Las Bahamas ha sido nuestro gran socio y vecino desde que Royal Caribbean zarpó por primera vez a las islas, hace más de 50 años."
