MAHAHUAL, MX — October 29, 2025— Following the acquisition of the Costa Maya Cruise Port in July 2025, Royal Caribbean was honored to become the new steward of the currently named Wayak Community Center. The center and the vacation company have a shared goal of enhancing this space for the Mahahual population in 2026. Those plans include relocating the center to a larger, more accessible location and inviting the community to help shape the center’s future, through a community vote to name the future center and through ongoing programmatic working groups. These changes represent a new chapter for this important venue, and Royal Caribbean is committed to ensuring that local community members are included every step of the way.
Since opening its doors in 2014, the center has been a vibrant hub for Mahahual, hosting more than 1,000 workshops focused on holistic development, positively impacting 90% of local children, and building a strong network of 60 active volunteers. The center’s Director Senaida Gómez will continue in her role, bringing her deep expertise and passion to new programming that will support the social, cultural and economic growth of residents of all ages.
“Exciting changes are coming to Mahahual, but what will remain constant is the mission of building a strong and resilient community for future generations,” said Ari Adler Brotman, President, Royal Caribbean Group Mexico. “Our regional initiatives will reflect Royal Caribbean’s legacy and proven expertise to promote economic development, community impact and environmental preservation in the destinations we operate. We look forward to working together with local partners as this evolution unfolds.”
New Centralized Location
The new center will feature modern facilities and thoughtfully designed spaces to host a wider range of activities and opportunities for all. The property, located along the Carretera Cafetal-Mahahual and near the geographical center of Mahahual, allows for easier access to all members of the community. Additionally, a new soccer pitch and versatile basketball and volleyball courts will be part of the new location. In the coming weeks, Royal Caribbean will request all required permits from local and state authorities to start construction of the new community center.
A Community Vote and Logo Contest
To ensure the community’s voice is at the heart of this evolution, a public vote will be held on November 8th from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the community center to select the center’s new name. Community members can vote for their favorite from three options, which were refined and selected at a community center working group in October.
Following the vote, Royal Caribbean will launch a logo design competition to celebrate local talent and bring the center’s refreshed identity to life. Interested artists should email community@rccl.com for more information.
Royal Caribbean is deeply committed to energizing the Mahahual community and bringing about a brighter future guided by the pillars of economic development, community impact and environmental preservation.
