Keeping an Eye on the Radar: Royal Caribbean Signs on First Chief Meteorologist

Royal Caribbean is working to help the communities hardest hit by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria.  From providing much needed provisions and relief supplies, to welcoming and taking care of evacuees, Royal Caribbean is dedicated to helping those affected by the ravaging acts of Mother Nature and will continue to support the recovery and rebuilding of those communities in the Caribbean.

Royal Caribbean’s Chief Meteorologist James Van Fleet and Oasis of the Seas Captain Per Kristoffersen collaborate to navigate toward the path of totality for the Great American Eclipse – a celestial phenomenon 99 years in the making.

Following Hurricanes Irma and Maria, Royal Caribbean mobilized Adventure, Majesty and Empress of the Seas to provide immediate help with provisions and evacuation efforts. Adventure of the Seas was leveraged most recently to bring evacuees from Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands to South Florida following a humanitarian relief trip.

OceanScope, an open-source data program that provides scientists with critical information to study climate and ocean conservation, which was developed in collaboration with Royal Caribbean Group, University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science, NASA, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

April 2023 – As Royal Caribbean International’s first ship powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), Icon of the Seas marks the next step in parent company Royal Caribbean Group's journey to introduce a net-zero cruise ship by 2035. “Making an Icon: Creating Memorable Vacations Responsibly” looks under the “hood” with experts in environmental programs, decarbonization, marine operations and more as they break down the firsts and proven efforts to come on Icon. From large-scale systems, including the first waste-to-energy system at sea, to the smallest details like LED lightbulbs, every program and application will play a part in making the world’s best vacation the most sustainable Royal Caribbean International ship yet.

Sydney’s Taronga Zoo and Royal Caribbean International have joined forces on the Litter Free Oceans campaign to raise awareness about the devastating impact litter has on marine life and educate people on how to reduce single-use plastic. The newly formed partnership combines Taronga’s expertise in conservation education with Royal Caribbean’s commitment to healthy oceans and ability to reach ocean lovers of all ages.

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd’s Terminal A – nicknamed the “Crown of Miami” for its appearance when seen from the water – officially opened today. The iconic state-of-the-art facility covers 170,000 square feet on 10 acres in the northeast section of the PortMiami.

Harmony of the Seas is the most energy-efficient and technologically advanced cruise ship ever built. Equipped with next-generation technologies, from a multi-stream exhaust gas cleaning system (scrubbers) to an air lubrication system that allows the ship to float on air, with millions of tiny bubbles created under the hull to reduce drag and increase fuel efficiency. Harmony of the Seas raises the bar on environmental stewardship technology.
